Definition of a tourniquet?
What are the indications for tourniquet use?
Pneumatic tourniquets are widely used in upper and lower limb surgery such as: reduction of fractures, arthroscopy of knee/wrist/hand/elbow, carpal tunnel, tendon repair etc...
They are also used for intravenous regional anesthesia (Bier’s block) to prevent the central spread of local anesthetics.
What are the contraindications for tourniquet use?
Limbs with severe infection, patients with poor cardiac reserve, and traumatized limbs are relative contraindications to tourniquet use.
